What is a Moth? The clothes moth is a significant pest, the larvae feeding on a wide variety of material of animal origin such woollens, angora, cashmere and furs. Damage from larval feeding can be severe and the larvae are often difficult detect as they shun the light. Outdoors, adults are on the wing from May to September. Indoors, adults are found all year round.
Did you know?
Moths can eat an entire carpet. During a treatment for one of our clients we inspecting the premises and found an old Persian rug rolled up in a plastic cover, when we opened it up it fell to pieces as the moths had eaten almost all of it away.
How do you know you have them?
In domestic properties obvious signs of infestation are damage to clothes and carpets especially around the edges. Check all clothes that you have not used and stored away, off cuts of carpets are particularly inviting to textile moths and should not kept. Fur coats are another favourite as they are not worn on a regular basis.
Why do we need to control them?
Textile moth can cause considerable damage to expensive rugs and clothes. We have had some instances where a whole house had to be carpeted due to the damage caused by moths.
How do we control them?
Our treatment programme for moths consists of two visits.
Our technician will initially talk through the problems you are experiencing and explain what our initial treatment entails.
He will then carry out a thorough inspection of your premises prior to any treatment and to assess the level and extent of the infestation.
Treatments consist of tracing the source of infestation, removing and destroying any infested materials and then applying a residual insecticide to infested areas. These areas include carpets, wardrobes, cupboards and loft areas to name but a few. Where we differ from other companies is that we carry out a dual insecticide treatment and additionally we would also treat with an ultra-low volume application of insecticide to eradicate adult moths and leave a barrier on alighting surfaces.
Whilst there is no difficulty in controlling these moths, it is essential that a thorough treatment be carried out and that every possible larva development site is treated. They may be found in association with birds' and mammals' nests, therefore these possibilities should be checked when tracing the source of the infestation.
Please note that before any treatment commences the property has to be prepared for treatment and full instructions are giving at the time of booking. It is imperative that the preparation instructions are adhered to as we are unable to treat premises that have not been properly prepared.
The follow up
Our follow up visit is carried out two weeks after the initial treatment and is exactly the same as the first visit. Once the treatment has been carried out the technician will complete a detailed inspection report and discuss ways of preventing re-infestation with you.
